Child Find

Hellgate Elementary has developed policies and procedures to ensure that children residing within its jurisdiction who have disabilities, regardless of the severity of their disability, and who are in need of special education and related services, are identified, located, and evaluated, including children in all public and private agencies and institutions within its jurisdiction. We follow a policy consistent with the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act to ensure student access to needed services.

Annually, the Director of Special Education coordinates the Child Find activities for children birth to fourteen years of age. Public notice for early childhood screening activities takes place during a two-week period prior to the scheduled event each year. Flyers are also given to daycare centers for dispersion to their respective parents. Signs are posted throughout the community in various business establishments such as grocery stores, banks, restaurants, and post offices. The school bulletin, sent home monthly to all community residents, includes information advertising the screening, and the information is posted on the district's web-site.

The district has a referral procedure that is part of the Child Find effort to identify school age children (ages 6-14), which includes pre-referral activities, referral, evaluation and decision-making regarding educational placement and programming.

Students who are not enrolled in Hellgate Elementary, but reside within the district are notified of the child's activities through the school bulletin, sent to all residents of the district.

Hellgate Elementary works closely with supportive agencies to provide appropriate services for post-school age individuals with disabilities.

All data that is collected through Child Find activities is maintained in secure storage within each school. All data is subject to the confidentiality requirements of Section 300.613-300.627. Each December 1st as required by law, the Hellgate Elementary submits a Special Education Child Count of students with disabilities currently being served to the Office of Public Instruction.
