    Introductory Robotics Program (Spring Only)

Hellgate Elementary Robotics Club (HERC) is an extracurricular robotics program available to third through eighth-grade students. Mrs. Jordan Capp (5th Grade Teacher) and Ms. Cali  Hislop directs the program. Several parent volunteers, coaches, and mentors from the community also help facilitate the HERC activities.

The Hellgate Elementary Board of Trustees along with the NASA Explorer School Program, Montana Space Grant, and Qwest corporation have provided financial and training support for HERC.

In a single school year, students can participate in one of two robotics program choices:

The first is the Introductory Robotics Program (IRP) that provides students with an introduction to Lego robotics, including the mechanics and programming of Mindstorms EV3 systems. Students have the opportunity to participate in simple task competitions between IRP build teams. All students in third through eighth grade are eligible to participate in the Introductory Robotics Program.

    Advanced First Lego League Team
    (Full Year Starting September 2018)

Applications will be available in the Spring of 2019.

Experienced robotics students may wish to join a FIRST Lego League traveling team. HERC supports several registered teams and competes in regional robotics competitions. FIRST Lego League is an international organization focused on bringing math, science and engineering experiences to students between the ages of 9 and 14.

Students on the FLL traveling teams work for twelve to sixteen weeks on solutions to the FLL annual team challenge. They then participate in the regional FLL competitions with other schools from across the state.

All students in third through eighth grade are eligible to participate in the FLL traveling team.

To be eligible for placement on an FLL team, students must completely fill out the FLL application to the best of their ability. In addition, parents and students must sign and comply with the provisions of the HRC student-parent contract.
