The fifth grade students are evaluated on the A, B, C, D, F grading system. The following explains what each grade represents:
4-point Quality and Effort Grade (given on some assignments)
excellent or outstanding
59% or below
not meeting minimum requirements of fifth grade
In order to give students more control over their grades, they may correct any non-test and non-daily assignments and return them to me for improved grades. Often I will alert students and parents to assignments that should be corrected and returned in the Friday What’s Happening letter or in comments on the assignment itself.
It is very important to hand assignments in on time. Tracking down late assignments causes a significant burden on my time as a teacher and hence takes away time from those who have completed their assignments responsibly. All assignments turned in late will receive a grade reduced by 20% or two letter grades. I will attempt to alert you to any late assignments through a red late assignment or "Academic" notice. This slip will inform you of the missing assignment and will require your signature. In addition, assignments missing from the grade book will be listed in the Friday note each week. Assignments for which no grade is entered are averaged as zeros when computing grades for midterms and report cards.Sometimes at the teacher’s discretion missing assignments will not be graded but merely checked in. When a lot of random missing assignments are turned in at the same time, it is tremendously time consuming to pull out the materials to grade each one. In such cases the teacher retains the option of putting a check mark on the assignment and then removing the zero from the grade book. The result is that the assignment will not be included in the final average grade. It will neither hurt nor help the final grade in that subject.
