• iPad Handbook-Procedures and Information

    The focus of the iPad program at Hellgate Elementary is to provide tools and resources to the 21st Century Learner. The procedures and information within this document apply to all iPads used at Hellgate Elementary and provide specific examples in accordance with the District’s existing Acceptable Use Policy. Teachers may set additional requirements for use in their classroom.

    1. Care of iPad

    Students are responsible for the general care of iPads and must maintain the device in satisfactory condition. Students are responsible to notify teachers about any iPads that are broken or fail to work properly.

    1.1 General Rules/Precautions

    -The iPad is school property and all users will follow this policy and the HESD acceptable use policy for technology.

    -Only use a clean, soft dry cloth or anti-static cloth to clean the screen.

    -Cords and cables must be inserted carefully into the iPad to prevent damage.

    -iPads must remain free of any writing, drawing, stickers, or labels that are not the property of HESD.

    -iPads must be used in the presence of HESD staff at all times. Use is not permitted in an unsupervised area.

    -Students are expected to understand how & be responsible for properly docking (charging) their iPad when needed.

    -Students must not remove any HESD labels.

    -iPads should always be within the protective case.

    -iPads should be used in a position as directed by the teacher.

    -iPads should never be placed in backpack or other carrying case. (iPad should be visible to teacher at all times)

    -iPads that malfunction or are damaged must be reported to the teacher immediately.

    Malfunction: The school district will manage repair of iPads that malfunction.

    Damage: Students may be responsible for the cost of repairs or replacement for iPads that have been damaged from student misuse, neglect, accidental or intentional damage.

    -Hellgate Elementary will immediately report any stolen iPads to the District Office and Police Department.

    1.2 Storing iPads

    When not in use iPads should be stored in their designated classroom areas. Nothing should be placed on top of the iPad.

    1.3 General Care/Screen Care

    The iPad screens can be damaged if subjected to rough treatment. The screens are particularly sensitive to damage from excessive pressure on the screen.

    -Do not lean on the top of the iPad when it is closed.

    -Do not place anything near the iPad that could put pressure on the screen.

    -Do not place anything in the cover that will press against the screen.

    2. USE OF iPads AT SCHOOL

    -iPads are intended ONLY for use at HESD in accordance with teacher expectations.

    -HESD School District reserves the right to review, monitor, and restrict information stored on or transmitted via HESD owned equipment and to investigate inappropriate use of resources.

    2.1 iPads in Unsupervised Areas

    Under no circumstances should iPads be in unsupervised areas. If an iPad is found in an unsupervised area, it will be secured by a staff member. The student responsible for the iPad is subject to disciplinary action from the District.

    2.4 Screensavers/Background photos

    -Students may not personalize the screen saver or background photo.

    -Passwords are not to be used on the device.

    2.5 Printing

    -Students may only print from iPads with specific permission from a teacher.

    -Students are responsible to print necessary materials to complete homework.

    3. SOFTWARE ON IPADS

    3.1 Originally Installed Software

    Ø All Music, software, apps, Internet activities/games must be district provided/installed. Software, apps, Internet activities/games originally installed by HESD must remain on the iPads. The licenses are the property of HESD. Periodic checks of iPads will be made to ensure that students have not removed required apps.

    3.2 Additional Software

    Students are not allowed to load extra software/apps on their iPads. HESD will synchronize the iPads so that they contain the necessary apps for school work. Students will not synchronize iPads or add apps unless directed by teacher.

    3.3 Procedure for re-loading software

    The school does not accept responsibility for the loss of any software or files if an iPad needs to be reset or restored for any reason.

    4 Responsibilities

    4.1 Parent/Guardian Responsibilities

    Talk to your children about responsibilities, values, expectations and standards for safe use of the Internet and care of the iPad device.

    5 Student Activities Strictly Prohibited:

    Violations may result in disciplinary action up to and including suspension/ expulsion for students. When

    applicable, law enforcement agencies may be involved.

    -Illegal installation or transmission of copyrighted materials

    -Any action that violates existing Board policy or public law

    -Sending, accessing, uploading, downloading, or distributing offensive, profane, threatening, pornographic,

    obscene, or sexually explicit materials

    -Use of chat rooms, sites selling term papers, book reports and other forms of student work

    -Messaging services-EX: MSN Messenger, ICQ, etc

    -Use of outside data disks or external attachments without prior approval from the administration

    -Changing of iPad settings (exceptions include personal settings such as font size, brightness, etc)

    -Downloading apps

    -Spamming-Sending mass or inappropriate emails

    -Gaining access to other student’s accounts, files, and/or data

    -Use of the school’s internet/E-mail accounts for financial or commercial gain or for any illegal activity

    -Use of anonymous and/or false communications such as MSN Messenger, Yahoo Messenger

    -Students are not allowed to give out personal information over the Internet. This includes, but is

    not limited to, setting up internet accounts including those necessary for social media, Ebay, email, etc.

    -Participation in credit card fraud, electronic forgery or other forms of illegal behavior.

    -Vandalism (any malicious attempt to harm or destroy hardware, software or data, including, but not limited to, the uploading or creation of computer viruses or computer programs that can infiltrate computer systems and/or damage software components) of school equipment will not be allowed

    -Transmitting, creating, recording, or accessing materials that are obscene, offensive, threatening or otherwise intended to harass or demean recipients.

    -Bypassing the HESD web filter.

    HESD Student Pledge for iPad Use

    1. I will take good care of school iPads.

    2. I will never leave the an iPad unattended.

    3. I will never loan out the school’s iPad to other individuals.

    4. I will be responsible for properly recharging the iPad when needed.

    5. I will keep food and beverages away from the school’s iPad.

    6. I will not disassemble any part of an iPad or attempt any repairs.

    7. I will protect the school’s iPad by carrying it individually with two hands.

    8. I will use iPads in ways that are appropriate, meet HESD expectations, and are educational.

    9. I will not place decorations such as stickers, markers, etc. on, or deface iPads, iPad covers or iPad identification labels.

    10. I understand that the school’s iPads are subject to inspection at any time without notice and remain the property of the HESD.

    11. I will follow the procedures outlined in the iPad Handbook.

    12. I will be responsible for all damage or loss caused by neglect or abuse.

    I agree to the stipulations set forth in the above documents including the iPad Procedures, and Information & the Acceptable Use Policy.
